Hotels

Oxford, a city renowned for its prestigious university and rich history, also offers luxurious accommodation that provides a unique window into the past. We are lucky to have such notable historic buildings as hotels in our city.

The Randolph Hotel

Built in the 1860s, The Randolph Hotel stands as an iconic symbol of Victorian Gothic architecture. Designed by William Wilkinson, it quickly became a central hub for visitors, especially those arriving by the newly established railway. The hotel has hosted numerous dignitaries and celebrities over the years and even featured in the popular TV series “Inspector Morse.” Today, it continues to offer sumptuous rooms and a wellness center, blending historical charm with modern luxury.

The Old Bank Hotel

Located on Oxford’s High Street, The Old Bank Hotel occupies a building with roots tracing back to the 18th century. Originally a bank, the property was transformed into a hotel in 1998. The hotel boasts 43 luxury rooms, many with stunning views of Oxford’s famous landmarks. Its central location makes it an ideal base for exploring the city. The Old Bank seamlessly combines contemporary design with historical elements, offering guests a unique and elegant stay.

The Old Parsonage Hotel

Dating back to the 17th century, The Old Parsonage Hotel exudes historic charm and character. Originally built as a guesthouse by Edward Selwood, a chef at St John’s College, it has witnessed centuries of Oxford’s history. The hotel retains many of its original features, including a bricked-up archway in the cellar, rumored to be part of a tunnel used during religious persecutions. Today, it offers a cozy, country house atmosphere with chic modern interiors and impeccable hospitality.

Malmaison Oxford

Perhaps the most unique of Oxford’s historic hotels, Malmaison Oxford is housed in a former prison within the Oxford Castle complex. The castle, originally built in 1071, served as a royal fortress before being converted into a prison in the 19th century. The prison operated until 1996, after which it underwent an extensive transformation into a luxury hotel. Guests can stay in converted prison cells, which have been stylishly refurbished to offer modern comforts while retaining their historical essence.

Tips for Finding Accommodation

Quality and location

In Oxford, the quality of rental rooms can vary significantly depending on the neighborhood. More affluent areas like Jericho, Summertown, and Headington tend to have higher-quality housing but also come with higher rents. These neighborhoods are popular due to their proximity to the University of Oxford and other amenities. On the other hand, areas like Cowley and East Oxford might offer more affordable options but could have varying standards of accommodation. There can also be differences linked to socio-economic factors of the residents.

Oxford City Council has been proactive in improving housing standards across the city. So rooms in house with no live-in landlord and multiple, un-related occupants are classed as HMOs (houses of multiple occupancy) which are required to be licenced and comply to specific health and safety standards.

Booking Platforms
Oxford has its own, legacy site called Daily Info.  Otherwise you can use recommended websites and apps such as Airbnb, Booking.com, and University Rooms to find the best accommodation options. These platforms offer a wide range of choices, from budget-friendly rooms to luxury homes.

Be very careful with accommodation offered via social media platforms such as Facebook, as there are many scams and fraudulent actors exploiting the shortage of affordable accommodation in Oxford.

Timing and Availability
Plan your booking according to peak seasons and academic calendars. The best times to book for short and midterm stays are typically during the off-peak months (November-December  and January- Mach) rwhen demand is lower.

Budgeting
Understand the average costs for different types of accommodation. In Oxford, shared rooms typically start from around £209 per week, private rooms range from £261 to £375 per week, and studio flats start from £450 per week for mid-term stays.

For longer-term rentals rooms are available from as little as £650 per calendar month, but expect to pay £850 or above for quality accommodation. Budgeting wisely and booking well in advance can help you find the best deals without compromising on comfort.

By following these tips and exploring the various accommodation options, you can find the perfect place to stay and make the most of your time in Oxford.
