The OxTrail 2024 becomes a perfect way to discover Oxford and Oxfordshire.

A Brief History of OxTrail

OxTrail is a public art project that transforms the streets of Oxfordshire into an open-air gallery. The trail features 138 large and mini ox sculptures, each uniquely decorated by local and national artists. The concept behind OxTrail is to celebrate the region’s heritage and creativity while raising funds for Sobell House Hospice, a charity providing compassionate end-of-life care.

Manu the ox, by Sian Tezel, a librarian at the Bodleian library, inspired by the manuscript “The Romance of Alexander”, the story of Alexander the Great written in old French.

The idea of using ox sculptures is inspired by Oxford’s name, which means “a ford (shallow crossing) for oxen.” This connection to the city’s history makes the oxen a fitting symbol for the trail. The first OxTrail took place 2 years ago, and it quickly became a beloved event, drawing visitors from near and far to explore the artistic creations scattered throughout the county.

Exploring Oxford and Oxfordshire with OxTrail

Follow the Trail

The OxTrail runs from July 6th to August 29th, 2024, and takes you on a journey through Oxford’s historic streets and the picturesque countryside of Oxfordshire. Each sculpture is a work of art, with designs ranging from whimsical and colorful to thought-provoking and intricate. You can start your adventure by downloading the OxTrail app (costing £1.99 of which £1.19 goes to charity) or picking up a map, which will guide you to each sculpture and provide information about the artists and their inspirations.

As ox hunters “collect” oxen they collect rewards, which can be redeemed from different sponsors after verification at the Oxtrail pop-up shop in the Westgate centre.

Discover Hidden Gems

While following the OxTrail, you’ll have the opportunity to discover some of Oxfordshire’s hidden gems. The trail takes you off the beaten path, leading you to charming villages, scenic parks, and lesser-known landmarks. It’s a fantastic way to explore areas you might not have visited otherwise and gain a deeper appreciation for the region’s beauty and diversity.

Engage with the Community

OxTrail is more than just an art exhibition; it’s a community event that brings people together. Many of the mini ox sculptures have been decorated by local schools, community groups, and even the Sobell House Hospice team. This involvement fosters a sense of pride and connection among residents and visitors alike.

As you explore the trail, you’ll have the chance to meet locals, learn about their stories, and experience the warm hospitality that Oxfordshire is known for.

Support a Worthy Cause

By participating in OxTrail, you’re also supporting a vital cause. Sobell House Hospice relies on donations to provide essential care and support to patients and their families. The funds raised through OxTrail help ensure that this compassionate care can continue. So, as you enjoy the art and explore the region, you’ll also be making a positive impact on the community.
